Birth of a legend
The book “Porsche 901” portrays the vehicles that launched the Porsche 911 legend. After the Porsche 901 celebrated its premiere at the IAA in Frankfurt in 1963, it took just under a year for Peugeot to take notice of the new model: the French had registered all three-digit model designations with a zero in the middle as trademarks. The model designation 901 was therefore short-lived. The Porsche 901 was renamed 911. Officially, no 901 ever found its way into private ownership – Porsche had scrapped most of the 82 vehicles built and sold the rest to factory employees. Until now, little was known about these predecessors of the legendary “911.” One of the highlights of the book is the story of a 901 found in a barn, whose loving restoration is documented in detail. At the end of the 1950s, Porsche began to think about a successor to the original Porsche, the 356. This task took longer than expected, because on the one hand, the 356 was still selling very well. On the other hand, numerous variants were created until the final design emerged under the pen of Ferdinand Alexander Porsche.
