For many motoring enthusiasts, the name Lancia is still
fondly associated with the racy and angular Delta S4 rally car
– the four-wheel-drive works racer made its debut at the final
round of the 1985 World Championship and immediately secured
a one-two victory for the team.
The model, with the internal designation SE038, was developed by
Fiat subsidiary Abarth, and the team of just under 100 specialists
devoted themselves to the task with complete dedication. Using a four-cylinder
engine fed by a supercharger and turbocharger, the engineers coaxed almost
500 PS from the power unit; four-wheel drive was not only the response to Audi’s
development, but also ensured that the immense power output
was transferred to the road with a reasonable degree of safety. A lightweight
plastic body completed the car, which, in the Corsa and Stradale versions,
was also offered for sale – with engine power reduced to 250 PS –
in limited numbers.
Even among experts, it is unclear exactly how many of these exquisite
factory replicas were ultimately manufactured and delivered, but this uncertainty
continues to play its part in fuelling the myth of the legendary Lancia rally car
even further.
