A Successful Debut
There have been—and continue to be—motorsport events that
even decades later are still regarded as
milestones in automotive history—among them
is the “1000 mil československých” race, which
in English translates to “1,000-Mile Race of Czechoslovakia.”
This event was first held in 1933.
The nationwide interest and the
publicity success for the two winning
teams prompted Jawa to participate in 1934
with specially built cars.
At the time this decision was made,
Jawa had by no means yet begun
manufacturing cars; this only began with the licensing
of the DKW Type F 2, which rolled off the assembly line
as Model 700 starting in 1934. In order to launch its new
model on the market and immediately impress the public
with a top-class finish in
this competition, Jawa
staked everything on victory and spared no
expense!
While the new Jawa 700 Sport competed in both the
convertible and closed versions,
there was another sports car
from the factory in Tynec nad Sázavou—known
as the Jawa 700 Jaray Coupé.
To design this special edition, Paul Jaray
traveled to Tynec nad Sázavou at Jawa’s invitation
and created the new design in just a few days.
With the number 4 on their doors, the
works team of Jaroslav Kaiser and Fran-
tišek Kronberger finished the
race in second place behind the winner—the
celebrations at the Jawa factory must have been huge!
