In Hollywood circles, the name George Barris is an icon – he created
K.I.T.T. for *Knight Rider* and designed the Batmobile in 1966.
Given his involvement with these unique film vehicles, it was
unthinkable for him to own a run-of-the-mill production Ferrari.
He therefore decided to transform his standard Ferrari 308 GTS
into a unique custom model, and to this end had the wheel
arches widened to make room for the BBS rims that were all the
rage in the 1970s. A front spoiler, a new grille at the rear, an
amber-coloured cover in place of the standard
pop-up headlights, and an unusual but undoubtedly very
eye-catching two-tone gold and copper paint finish, accented by a
subtle green, red and white stripe to highlight its Italian origins,
completed the exterior look.
Inside, a special feature was a car telephone – highly exotic for the time –
and a no less expensive reversing camera. At the rear,
George Barris also made sure to adorn the Ferrari
logo with the addition ‘Barris Kustom’.
In keeping with its owner’s tastes, the car also made an appearance
in front of the camera – it had a cameo in *Knight Rider* – but beyond that,
George Barris apparently found little time to drive his 308, as he
recently sold it with just 8,000 miles on the clock.
