The DKW in a Special Livery
Alongside his extremely successful motorsport
colleagues Walter Schlüter and Heinz Meier,
Ingolstadt factory driver Hubert Brand
also sat behind the wheel of a Rallye F 91 in 1954 and
achieved some notable successes—such as at the 16th
Wiesbaden Rally, which he finished in fifth place
alongside Hermann Luba.
On the entry lists for the numerous rally events
and hill climbs, Hubert Brand was always listed
driving a DKW in the class up to 1000 cm³—which
certainly corresponded to the F 91, but anyone who
took a closer look at his sports car quickly realized
that it in no way resembled the production model
in appearance. The steel body looked far more
appealing and rounded than the production model;
overall, his car appeared sportier and bore
subtle similarities to the Porsche
365 of that era. The body was one of a kind—some
see traces of Pininfarina in it, while
others believe the sheet metal came from
the body shop Baur.
Without having achieved any outstanding victories with the car,
Hubert Brand sold his
“Brand Sports Car”—as it was referred to in the entries for
several races—to the Austrian
driver Herbert Roittner in 1957.
Roittner competed in it at the first “Semperit
Rally,” which took place on May 18–19, 1957, and
went on to become a classic event in the Austrian
motorsports scene.

later, on August 12, 1957, the DKW—with its exclusive
interior—was reduced to
scrap metal in an accident
