The DKW in a special guise
In 1954, alongside his extremely successful motorsport
colleagues Walter Schlüter and Heinz Meier, Ingolstadt factory driver Hubert Brand
also sat behind the wheel of a Rallye F 91 and
achieved respectable results - as in the 16th
Rallye Wiesbaden, which he finished in fifth place
together with Hermann Luba.
In the entry lists of numerous rallies
and hill climbs, Hubert Brand always competed
in a DKW in the class up to 1000 cm³ - which
certainly corresponded to the F 91, but anyone who looked more closely
at his sports car quickly realized
that it by no means corresponded to the appearance of the production model.
The steel bodywork looked much more pleasing
and rounder than the production model,
overall his car looked sportier and had
subtle similarities to the Porsche 365 of the time.
The bodywork was a one-off - some saw
the features of Pininfarina in it, while others
believed the bodywork came from
the coachbuilding company Baur.
Without having achieved a prominent victory with the car,
Hubert Brand sold his "Sports Car Brand", as it was called
in entries for some races, to the Austrian
driver Herbert Roittner in 1957.
He started with it in the first 'Semperit
Rallye', which took place on May 18/19, 1957
and subsequently developed into a classic of the Austrian
motorsport scene. Almost three months
later, on August 12, 1957, the exclusively
bodied DKW was turned into scrap metal
due to an accident
