The racy sports car was an extremely
lightweightvehicle made from fibreglass, aluminium and Kevlar, boasting
400 PS and breaking the 300 km/h barrier – which was a record at the time.

Although Rally Class B came to an abrupt end in 1986 following two fatalities,
Ferrari had by that point already developed its works
racer. Whilst the homologated 288 GTO was already a very
sporty car, the 288 GTO perfected in-house –
which was given the suffix ‘Evolutione’ – took the crown. It now boasted
a truly incredible 650 PS, and weighed
940 kg, resulting in a power-to-weight ratio of 1.61 kg/PS –
which, at the time, was close to the ideal of 1 kg/PS!

However, no one ever found out how this rally monster would have fared
against the Porsche, Lancia or Audi competition, as the Italian
works racer never competed in a race! Five examples
of the rally Ferrari, capable of speeds of almost 370 km/h, were built, but
none of them were ever used in racing conditions.
